Kira is the main protagonist of the second book in The Giver Quartet, Gathering Blue, also appearing in Messenger and Son as a secondary character. As an orphan with a deformed leg, she struggles to survive in her village, where disabled people like her are considered useless. She is married with Jonas.
History[]
Gathering Blue[]
Kira is the main character of Gathering Blue. She was born with a twisted leg and is disabled. She becomes a Threader, living at the Council Edifice.
Her mother, Katrina, died of an unknown illness (though Kira thought that she might have been poisoned) and her home, called a cott (presumably short for cottage), was burned to prevent spreading the illness to the rest of the community.
She was taken to the Council of Guardians when Vandara wanted to make a pen for the little tykes and animals that disturbed the work that everyone was doing. After a trial, the Council determined Kira was allowed to stay in the village, although Vandara was granted Kira’s land. Kira was given a place to live in the Council Edifice in exchange for her work.
Kira's job at the Council Edifice was to repair the Singer's Robe. Since her mother had died before teaching Kira how to make dyes, she began to visit her mother’s former teacher, Annabella, who then taught Kira. After Annabella died (supposedly in her sleep, after telling Kira that there were no beasts), Kira was left to learn and remember the rest herself. Her job was to repair and restore the Robe, and once finished with that, to add onto it the future.
Thomas, Kira's friend, was a Carver. He was supposed to restore the Singer's Staff. Kira and Thomas lived in rooms that were close to each other. Thomas helped Kira remember what plants (and what parts of plants) to use when making dyes for thread.
Messenger[]
Kira makes small appearances in the Village, while Matt is the main protagonist. Matt helps Kira to bring her to Village, when the borders were closing.
Son[]
Kira is married to Jonas and now lives in the Village where her father used to live (Christopher), and they have two kids, Annabelle and Matthew, named after Matty and Annabella. Kira first shown with Jonas in their house, after she had put Matthew and Annabelle to bed. She is shown throughout Part 3 and talks to Gabe towards the end.

- Jonas - Spouse in Son
- Matt/Matty (Deceased after Messenger) - Friend/Surrogate Brother
