In The Giver, Gabriel is considered a new hold in danger of being marked as Failure to Thrive. Jonas's family takes him in at night, and when Jonas leaves the Community he takes Gabriel with him.
Gabriel is occasionally cared for by Claire in the beginning of the book, as a bright, eager infant, yet fretful at night. He and Claire spent a lot of time together, but being so young, he did not remember Claire.
When the book skips ahead, Gabriel is 8 or 9 years old. He is desperate to find parents, and sometimes childish. Jonas tried to explain things to Gabriel the best he could, but "Gabriel had hooted with laughter. 'Hah. Where do babies come from? Every kid asks that.' It was a challenge to explain the concept of being assigned parents and Birthmothers. He noticed Claire watching her, but did not pay attention to her, who appeared to be very old. Gabe discovered his power to veer, or enter one's thoughts and feel them, while watching a wrestling match. He had admired Matty.
Then, Gabriel is a typical adolescent, and quite ambitious. He has a desire to build a boat so she could search for his parents. He, as Jonas put it, "feels such a longing for something, and I worry that he'll never find it." Gabriel did built a boat, but when he tried it out, it failed. However, when he met Claire, he realized that she was his mother and fought Trademaster, thus regaining her youth and saving her from her death.
